Convert YouTube Shorts to a Video Prompt, End to End
Published October 13, 2026 · 7 min read
This is the procedural version: one Shorts clip in, one generation-ready prompt out, with the checks placed where they actually catch errors. It assumes you have read nothing else in this cluster — so the reasoning lives in the linked guides and this page stays a runbook.
The six-step path
1 → find the shot. 2 → excerpt 6–12 seconds. 3 → extract with a tool. 4 → strip platform furniture. 5 → repair the camera and light lines. 6 → rebuild in vertical form and test. The whole sequence takes about five minutes, and the order is deliberate: every step that costs a credit comes after a step that could have made it unnecessary.
Steps 1–3: source and extraction
1. Find the shot. Watch the Short twice: once for the reason you kept watching, once with the sound off. If the second pass reveals nothing, the clip was carried by audio and there is no prompt in it.
2. Excerpt. Keep one continuous shot — no cut inside the window — and prefer 6–12 seconds. Two reasons: a single prompt describes a single shot, and SocialToPrompt’s stated full run covers videos up to 20 seconds at 4 credits, with the extraction step costing 1 and the prompt 3.
3. Extract. Paste the Shorts URL or upload the file (uploading skips the extraction credit). Wait out the narrated stages — frames, content, motion, camera, style, aesthetics — in 20–40 seconds per the site. Download the .txt, don’t just copy.
Steps 4–6: repair and rebuild
4. Strip the furniture. Delete every clause about burned-in captions, stickers, progress bars, channel watermarks and the original’s UI. Cross-posted clips bring a TikTok watermark with them, and the content stage will describe it as though it were set design.
5. Repair the two weak fields. Camera: scrub and watch the corners, then write one verb (locked-off, handheld drift, push in, track, whip pan). Light: add a direction and a quality — phone content is usually one visible source, so say which.
6. Rebuild for vertical. State the crop in physical terms (subject fills frame height, tight headroom, horizon in the upper third), give it a duration, and describe the end frame. Then generate, and compare against the source at the same size.
A worked Shorts conversion
Source: 11s Short — hand lifts a lid, steam clears, product revealed, hard top light.
After extraction: A person cooks in a kitchen, steam rises, warm lighting, close-up, smooth
camera, cinematic food video, ends on the dish.
After repair: vertical 9:16, macro of a cast-iron pot, hand lifts the lid upward and out of
frame; camera locked-off with slight handheld drift; hard top light, strong
specular on the rim, dark surround; steam billows toward lens then clears,
revealing the dish centred; warm grade with high contrast and deep shadows;
6s, ends on the dish centred and steam thinning.
Every change is a subtraction of ambiguity. “A person cooks” became the object; “smooth camera” became an honest locked-off frame; “cinematic” became specular highlights and shadow depth; and the clip acquired an ending.
Testing against the source
Three checks in order, one variable changed per run: does the camera behave like the reference; does the light come from the same place; is the palette in the same family. Fix the first failure alone and re-render before touching anything else — that discipline is from the eight-slot template, and the reasoning behind each field is in converting a video to an AI prompt field by field.
If you have more than one Short in mind, stop fixing singles and switch to the library method: Shorts-specific mechanics, the YouTube extraction diagnostic, and turning viral videos into a prompt set. And keep the rights test in view: a shot recipe transfers, a creator’s face, voice and script do not.
Frequently asked questions
What's the fastest way to convert a YouTube Short into a prompt?
Excerpt one continuous shot of 6 to 12 seconds, upload or paste it into an extractor, download the structured prompt, then spend two minutes on repair: delete overlay descriptions, correct the camera verb, add a light direction, and state duration and end frame in vertical terms.
Why should I upload a file instead of pasting the Shorts URL?
Two reasons: it skips the extraction step, which is billed separately from prompt generation, and it guarantees the analysis reads the exact window you care about rather than the whole clip. SocialToPrompt accepts MP4, MOV and WebM uploads.
What do I do about a TikTok watermark on a Short?
Delete any clause describing it. A watermark is platform furniture, not cinematography, and a renderer will attempt to reproduce it as graphic content. If the clip is otherwise interesting, its shot recipe survives the removal intact.
How do I verify the conversion worked?
Generate, then compare side by side at the same size and answer three questions in order: same camera behaviour, same light direction, same palette family. Change one variable per run rather than rewriting the whole prompt.
